Religion in one word - fear.
Religion, any religion is about a fear of the unknown and specifically, a fear of death.
Religion is ego based since it offers the practitioner an opportunity to feel like they will overcome death, that after they are no longer here, they will exist somewhere else in a conscious state.
Religion satisfies the ego because it allows the person to move from a state of knowing mortality to a state of infinite immortality.
Consider the amount of wars and the inconceivable level of death and destruction which have befallen this planet in the name of a religion. Organized religion is a manifestation of the ego -- ego as religion. In all cases, ego as religion overtakes and overcomes an individual's spirituality. A religion in practice is an ego at play. This is where we move towards the idea that we have to fight for our personal belief systems because our ideas and beliefs surrounding a religion become the center of who we are - our Ego and our Self.

This concept of ego as religion is embedded in other ideologies and philosophies as well, not just in organized or institutionalized religious faiths. Anytime a person is in a position of believing their way is the right way, the only way, the normal way, or acceptable way -- they are practicing ego as religion. They are practicing fear, self-doubt and a host of other insecurities.
A belief in a particular religion, allows a person to put their faith in tomorrow and not live for today. Tomorrow is an illusion and does not exist. There is no alternative for tomorrow as it may never come. Put your faith in the moment where you currently stand. Make each moment your religion and leave the ego for tomorrow.
