What The Fu*k Is Fa*ke News?

The day before Halloween, October 30, 1938 a filmmaker named Orson Welles broadcasted a radio show called, The War of the Worlds. In the broadcast, the filmmaker informed the American public that Martians were attacking the planet earth. Welles failed to inform the listener that the broadcast was fake -- that it was not real events occurring, it was just entertainment. The public was not informed that the dramatic broadcast was not 'real' it was in fact 'fake.' This is probably the best historical example of FAKE NEWS.
Likewise, there have been thousands of reports that a planet called Niburu is going to collide with the Earth and destroy all life on the planet. This could be deemed as fake news since it was reported online, but in fact, no news agencies recorded or reported it on the public record. More importantly, there was no proof of this happening or occurring. This could probably be deemed as fake news.

Imagine The War of the World scenario again. The year 1938 was a period in time before advanced visual technology. Consider a young child watching a modern film where graphic artists can render scenes beyond imagination; and a child doesn't have the experience to realize the technology behind the film medium. The child might really believe what they are watching is 'real.'
As a result of The War of the Worlds broadcast, some people were so terrified they committed suicide during the airing the show. Issues of ethics in media was raised when those in authority realized the impact information, accurate and otherwise, could have on the masses.
So What's Fake?
It becomes ever more important to have precision in the words we use to express and convey accuracy of information as there are varying layers.
There is a difference between intentionally misinforming the public or lies, propaganda, and mistakes in conveying information (news) to the public.
As such, simply calling news which lacks some level of accuracy fake news is a fatal and lazy error in judgement and perception. Calling a mistake 'fake news' is potentially manipulative and an issue of propaganda.

Propaganda
The Second World War (WWII) was September 1, 1939 – September 2, 1945. It cannot necessarily be proven, but more than likely there was a propaganda link to The War of the Worlds broadcast and the fact that 11 months later, the planet would be involved in something similar to a civil war in Europe. Three years later on December 7, 1941, the US joined the war -- and perhaps The War of the World broadcast was developed to prepare and indoctrinate the American public to join the war effort.*
On December 7th, 1941, the Japanese an Axis Power, bombed Pearl Harbor. The US entered the war due to this act of aggression. This is widely known. However, what if this was reported today as:
On December 7th, 1941, the Germans an Axis Power, bombed Pearl Harbor.
On a first take, you might think someone simply made a mistake because Germany and Japan were Allies. But what if, someone with an agenda wanted to purposely turn the general public against Germany. Perhaps they intentionally meant to promote misleading information in an effort to manipulate the public, and bring the public into getting on board with their agenda(s) in regards to turning the world against Germany. What if, someone, even after realizing the statement of Germany bombing Pearl Harbor as false, still kept publishing this false information in wider media, and getting news outlets to 'publish' this information. Voila!
There is a concerted effort to widely publish and broadcast false information -- fake news.
And What About Global Warming
There are news and scientific studies and reports with statistics relative to the environment and the phenomena that it may be heating up due to pollution, specifically carbon emissions. Scientists can prove the science behind the assumption that pollution damages the health of humans and the natural environment. Can a scientist fake statistics? Yes it is possible, but as more and more scientists in separate studies find similar results related to global warming due to pollution, then it is not probable that the statistics are fake.

Is the issue of global warming fake news? Hardly. Why? Because what the fu*k is fake news in regards to the theory of global warming?
So, to simply say that global warming is 'fake news' is a popular and lazy way to say, I think global warming is fiction, not fact -- it is made up, like a fictional story about hobbits in Middle Earth.
Information and Knowledge is Power
If you are allowing anyone or source to simple convey any form of misinformation as 'fake news' you are cheating yourself of critical thinking, and thereby handing your power to someone else.
For instance, what if you changed the course of your life, or based a decision for your future on inaccurate information -- and you took information at face value -- meaning you didn't research what you were being told for accuracy, relevance and logic?
The next time someone mentions fake news, force and challenge them to make a distinction in what they mean by fake. Ask them specifically, what was fake about the information, and if in fact the information was reported as news.
Get methodical in your effort to discern fact from fiction because that is really what we are talking about. I am not sure about you, but I take pride in my ability to discern fact from fiction and avoid following the masses or having anyone believe they have the ability to control how I think and interpret information.

*This is just my opinion, it is not news or even fake news -- it is a theory. If I was able to find supportable facts that the US government requested Welles to develop the show in an effort to scare the American public and condition them for war -- this could prove the broadcast was a form of propaganda.
